In or Out: Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman attends the Birdwatchers - La Terra Degli Uomini Rossi premiere at the Sala Grande during the 65th Venice Film Festival in Venice, Italy wearing Rodarte.

Mmmm. We're gonna have to say out. Natalie's worn Rodarte before and we don't think she's quite got the goods to pull of slightly edgier looks like this. We're all for ladies taking risks on the red carpet, but there's a disconnect between the look and the person who's wearing it here.

Wow, a Chris March inspired dress. I vote out.

i think it's a kind of in. a safe in. a "dont critque the look because it's just sort of...there" in

i LOVE natalie portman (and her hair) and she should probably stick to Lanvin. but she is a sweetheart, a beautiful sweetheart and snaps to her for the confidence to at least TRY this dress.

She's too boyish for that dress.

She's too boyish for any dress.

I think in. I wouldn't point to this dress as an amazing fashion 'do', but I think she looks pretty enough.

Certainly it stands out, and not really in a bad way.

I think your standards are too high. Out should be reserved for fashion atrocities. This does not qualify. She looks confident and pretty, and the dress suits her fine, if not perfectly.

Not a glorified IN, but an IN nonetheless.

The dress emphasizes her lack of boobage. I would say the look is an almost-but-not-quite.

I think it's a Just Misses - Out.

Love the hair and make up and LOVE the shoes.

The dress is very cool but I much prefer it minus cut outs - but I'm a Safe Dresser so clearly this isn't to my taste.

She looks a tad uncomfortable doesn't she? Like she's thinking "hmm...am I pulling this off? I think I am....I'm not sure...am I??"

It's almost there - but misses by just a bit.

Are those shoes Vegan and "green"?

I love Natalie and think she is one gorgeous human being. However. That dress just does not suit her. I would say, Natalie, IN, dress, OUT.

FashionFanatic

Not sure about this dress and I do like Rodarte; I think the dress is a bit heavy for her and she looks much older than she is.

Not so much. She's too...soft for this dress.

LaFemmeFataledeNY

The dress only works if you go a little wild with the styling like in the picture with the model. Her hair, makeup and shoes are way too "safe" to go with that dress.

I say in - I think she looks pretty, and I appreciate that she took the risk. She could have worn something boring and predictible.

She is IN. The dress - not so much.

I usually find her confidence, smile and poise make her an IN regardless.

Amanda in Austin

That dress is so FUG. On anyone it would look FUG.

The hair is as messy as the dress.

another laura

I think the dress is not translating well from tall, bony model to teensy actress.

She's very young and hey, doesn't look like a ho or like she just got out of bed and didn't shower.

She's In.

I realize these are low standards.

She's to sweet looking for this look. And she's teeny, so on her, it is really a lotta look. Agreed, an almost there, but not quite.

she looks a little too pretty and sweet for an edgy look like this. but that being said, while she doesn't rock the look, she doesn't look like a trainwreck either. i would give her a passable in.

and hey, she's wearing shoes from her own line! good for her :)

Did her washing machine EAT that dress and spit it back out? OUT. But she is a beautiful girl.

I think half, three quarters, of the details and odds and sods could have been edited out.

I think it looks better on Natalie than on the model. She focused on the lacy, retro-inspired part of the look for her shoes and accessories, which softened the look of the dress while still maintaining a little edge. A definite 'in' for Natalie, but the torn stockings on the model is a definite out!

Nope. Looks like she's wearing someone else's dress. She may show courage in wearing this, but also a lack of self-awareness.

Sometimes girlie, flirty hair and make up can really contrast nicely with an edgier dress. In this case, not so much.

I hate to say out cuz I lurve Ms. Portman but I don't love how this look came together on her.

Maybe with a sculptural or messy up 'do? Shoes are cute.

i fancy darcy

Ever since I heard she dissed my favorite quartet of hobbits I admit to a dislike of Ms. Portman. That said, she is taking a fashion risk here, but maybe should think again, it's really not a look for her.

Hate Rodarte. Love Portman. This dress is NOT her. But then again, I think it's not anyone. Aside from the dress, her styling looks great and she is as gorgeous as ever. So, Portman is in, dress is OUT.

Natalie is always in, but that dress is OUT.

Too much going on. It reminds me of something put together on a Saturday afternoon at an Arts and Crafts workshop next to a bar.

She always has such a beautiful face, I forget she is wearing clothes.

But seriously, where is her Givenchy.
She needs one stat!

I say NUTS to ya! You crazy peoples!

She looks gorgeous, and the dress is beautiful. Shoes are fantastic. IN, IN and IN!

not on her. i love the dress so much on the runway, though. has anyone seen the rodarte backstage photos? GORGEOUS.

The shoes are IN. Want.

The dress - not so much.

The dress on her - not so much more.

Maybe edgier styling could've helped this?

The only thing I don't like about it is the lining of the skirt only goes about 1/3 of the way down (it's the same on the runway). But she's in. I would love to have a Rodarte dress.

Out, out, oh so out!

I think if it were a softer color, it would have worked better. The black fringe is a bit harsh.

honesty.not.pc

OUT!

I hate those umpaloompa shoes.

Some edgier styling would have helped. She is beautiful, but she isn't wearing this dress with much conviction! Cheri

That dress sucks! If that went down the PR runway it would be torn to shreds just because rodarte is rodarte doesn't make him infallible

Really? I think she looks fabulous! I think she's one of the few women in Hollywood who CAN pull off an edgy, runway-inspired look.

I think it would've worked if she still had her short hair shortly after she'd shaved it all for V for Vendetta.

And hate the shoes. They take away from the dress.

The dress is in, Natalie Portman is out. She is not pulling off this look at all. Her hair and makeup is gorgeous, but everything together feels so disconnected.

I love the look but not on her.

Yeah, out. Dumb dress.

What is that supposed to mean? She doesn't have fake breasts like most of Hollywood?

She is damn beautiful and works what she's got.

She's young, cute and has the body for it. I say in - with reservations. I'm not madly in love with the dress, but it does look kind of cute on her.

Natalie is gorgeous, but, wow, what a hideous frock. Love the shoes, though.

Scott in L.A.

oh, so sorry boys, but you missed on this one.

No, she is not edgy. So if an edgy person wore this dress, it would have a different feeling.

But this dress is very unusual, and she makes it look much classier, more elegant. Not all dresses in the world can swing both ways, but she makes this work.

However, I would not have faulted her if she would have ripped off the shoulder fringe. It would have accentuated the elegance more.

I don't care for the dress, but she looks lovely and comfortable wearing it, so I say "IN".

She is so far out it's a surprise the dress is still on her.

close but not there--
she needed to bring the drama with hair and makeup and she didn't.

She looks to me like she went swimming and got caught in a fishing net.

I only want to see Dolphin Safe Portman from now on.

I like that dress and I do think she can pull it off.
She should have done something with her hair and she should have worn less boring shoes. That dress needs a bit more edge or something wild.

The dress emphasizes her lack of boobage

That sounds like she doesn't have boobs but I assure you she does have some and other than the rest of Hollywood it's all her own and quite nice to look at.
Just because her boobage is small, there's no need to fake it so it looks larger than it is. Small is great.

She doesn't look boyish to me, not at all. She's quite girly actually, cute face, nice figure, girly hair...

out for natalie, but the dress looks REALLY fucking good on the model. love rodarte.

I'm going to have to agree. The dress is hideous. It looks mangled and stressful, almost like a Tim Burton creation.

OUT.

Ugh, out. I love her, but she's too short & too youthful for this look - like a little girl in a Halloween costume.

However, those shoes give her great gams. Hot! We'll just look hemline down, then.

I love the shoes. The dress is sort a formal goth.

NEXT.

The dress is kinda ungepotchet. Whatever that means. But the shoes are great and actually look comfortable.

Can someone tell me why no one wears stockings anymore? Something about the nekkid foot inside a high heel (no matter how lovely the foot or the shoe) just looks wrong to me. And nobody has flawless skin on their legs...mosquito bites, nicks, etc. etc. A little nylon goes a long way.

Applaud her courage! Compare this woman's wardrobe with that of, say, Ms. Jolie -- it's marvelous to see a radiant young woman eschew the lure of endless goddess gowns in catalogue colors. She knows, as we know, that "well-dressed" can be a prison.

That said, the runway model's styling annotates this look. Notice that her bangs echo the fringed shoulders, that the nude (not white) bodice melts into the shown skin, and that the tatting on the legs continues the overlaid textures, elongating the silhouette. The contrasting shoe insists that this is not a costume (if you doubt, imagine Doc Martens. See?).

Ms. Portman is, perhaps, smarter than her stylist, but she is never boring. Brava.
