Judging the Judges: Fall 2008 Bridal Collections

Tuesday, April 22, 2008 by
Darlings, it's that time of year again, when young women get to realize their lifelong dream of arguing with their mothers over flower arrangements and caterers. Yes, it's bridal season and what better way to observe it than to listen to two queens rip the gowns?

Three of Project Runway's former guest judges have recently shown their bridal collections and we've got the goods.

Badgley Mischka

Feh. There's a sort of plain-jane sameness going on here. We're definitely of the camp that says that the less frippery and Disney-princess embellishments, the better, but aside from the third dress, we're not sold on this collection.

Monique Lhuillier

These, we like. There are a range of silhouettes and styles here. We especially like dresses one and two. Four and five are just a little too doily-like for our tastes. Three looks a little too Harlow and the bodice on six looks like a foundation garment.

Vera Wang

Number four is a harlot!

We've criticized Vera for things in the past, but one area where she simply can't be ripped is the bridal dress. She does it better than just about anybody else.

That's not to say we love all of these. Number two is outrageously unflattering. We like the touches of black on five and six. Also like the coat version on seven. We've seen eight plenty of times before and nine looks like the aforementioned Disney princess. Ten has just a little too much going on.

And you bitches? What do you all think? A girl in a bridal gown is practically an invitation to be judgmental, so let's hear it.

Vera Wang: No. 2 is unflattering? How about the first one? Asymetrical saddlebags? Yeah, every girl's dream.

But I love the purple one. If you're going to go different, that's a great way to do it: record-skipping color yet classy, elegant design.

Wait, I was first? Wow.

Vera's #2 is awful. #1 and #3 both suffer from too much in all the wrong places as well.

Badgley Mischka's collection is simple and there's nothing earth-shatteringly new about it, but it is quite lovely.

And Lhuillier's gowns are in that same "quite lovely" category, but fail to ring any wedding bells for me.

Anonymous said...

OK, I know this is FASHION and all but would it kill the models to SMILE? Those are some seriously unhappy "brides" up there.

I actually like Monique's dress #5, it has a vintage/antiquey feel to it I just find appealingly romantic. It would also be appropriate in church with that gorge jacket and then rockin' at the reception once the jacket comes off.

Loooove the Monique Lhuillier bridal collection! So very elegant. So timeless.

Vera Wang's collection is Vera. What can I say. Her gowns truly are heirloom pieces --- worthy of being handed down from one generation to the next (do people still even do that?). However, the No. 2 silk-champagne gown is a problem. Who wants to come down the aisle with a kangaroo pouch?

LOL. Were you at my wedding? ML's collection is very chic. I love it!

Loved Vera's coat dress. That is what I should have worn getting married in January in Chicago during an ice storm.

Now I really wish I had taken a picture of all the little bugs crawling around in the tulle on the gowns in the window of the Vera Wang Bridal Boutique in Millburn, NJ.

I love Monique's collection and most of Vera's. I thought the same thing about Vera's #2 - how do you make a toothpick model look hippy? A mermaid silhouette usually gives a skinny woman curves, but this one is ridiculous.

I'm disappointed with BM's collection. It looks so $99 at David's Bridal.

Anonymous said...

Well, I was right there with you until Vera Wang. I think she has swallowed a 'lude or something.

Vera 1, 2 & 3... why would a bride want to look HEAVIER on her wedding day? Although perhaps #2 is for the bride who doesn't mind admitting that she doesn't believe in birth control. And #4, thank you for using the word harlot; a wonderful vocabulary word that is not trotted out enough these days. (but i actually might like the dress in white). 5&6 OK once you dispose of the dark green foliage.
Now that white coat would be fabulous to protect the real dress from a downpour, but other than that, I think not. The final three EEEEK! is she kidding?? (did Rami help on #8?)

My daughters have always wanted a Vera Wang wedding dress. I have a new name for them: Monique Lhuillier!!! She is fab.u.lous!

Anonymous said...

Gotta echo fashionfanatic; Lhullier #2 is a freakin' dream gown. And I say this as a person who is usually all about the Disney princess-type of wedding dress. <3!

Love the second dress from Monique Lhuillier, my dream dress, too, fashionfanatic!

The second one from Vera Wang--awful!!! It looks like her butt is in the front. No one wants that.

dorei said...

I'm sorry loves, but the black stuff on the Vera Wang dresses look like tumors to me. Meh.

chicksinger said...

Eh. As it is, most brides pick dresses that end up wearing the brides rather than the other way around, and these dresses would be no exception to that. Designer bridal gowns are fun to look at but, when it comes down to the reality of the big day, are highly impractical and uncomfortable.

This from someone who had spent enough time wearing hoop skirts and corsets in student operas and caroling quartets that she chose an off-the-rack informal wedding gown that required minimal support garments and no pantyhose. So I am definitely no longer the bridal designers' prime audience.

Anonymous said...

Oh, Bill, thank you for reminding us of your VW bug incident - hee!

MH - generally just love, what a range! But number 3? oh no, no, no. That dress is made for standing still, zero body fat and no undergarments, it's just not wearable as a wedding dress. But the rest, as a group, my faves of these three. Love the lace!

Susan from the Pacific Northwest said...

I just assumed the Want #2 is for the pregnant bride. It is still unflattering.

Anonymous said...

Vera Wang #2 looks like that model somehow got her butt in the FRONT of her dress.

Anonymous said...

The last Vera Wang reminds me of lasagna noodles.

PhantomMinuet said...

I like the second Lhuillier and the fifth and seventh Wangs. Other than that, meh.

PhantomMinuet said...

Now I really wish I had taken a picture of all the little bugs crawling around in the tulle on the gowns in the window of the Vera Wang Bridal Boutique in Millburn, NJ.

That brings back memories. I attended a wedding in a state park once, and while the bride was standing outside the chapel in a field before the procession, all sorts of little crawlies found their way between her underskirt and overskirt. I thought it was hilarious.

The bride? Not so much. :-D

Anonymous said...

That photo of Vera Wang #2 is seriously puzzling. Is the model just taking the swayback walk to the extreme? It really looks like someone photoshopped the "coming" top onto the "going" bottom. I didn't spot this one in the video so couldn't tell what was going on.

Anonymous said...

Vera Wang better watch her ass. Monique's dresses are GORGEOUS!

Anonymous said...

Totally agree with lemniscus. These models are supposed to be BRIDES on the happiest days over theirs lives.

That said: Thank you, Monique for including at least 1 dress with sleeves. Not every bride dreams of standing around tugging awkwardly at the bodice of her gown.

While I like the idea of the black touches (or green or whatever color they are) on Vera Wang's #5 and #6 dresses, the reality is they look like mildew or something sprouting off the shoulder.

Here's what I found about Monique Lhuillier - Very interesting:

"Monique launched her first bridal collection in 1999. In the year 2000, she designed her first evening collection. Monique Lhuillier was awarded Glamorous Bridal Designer award in the year 2001. She also received the 2002 Avant Garde Bridal Designer Award from Wedding Dresses magazine and bridal industry members. Her popularity grew further, when she designed wedding gowns for Christine Baumgartner’s wedding, when she got married to Kevin Costner and Britney Spears wedding, when she got married to Kevin Federline, in 2004. Monique Lhuillier has designed wedding dresses for Natalie Imbruglia, Debbie Matenopoulos, and Charlotte Ross etc."

I LOVE her gowns! You can find them on eBay and there not THAT expensive.

Anonymous said...

oops...THEY'RE not that expensive...

If I were getting married, and I had to choose a designer based on these collections, it would be no contest.

Lhullier wins, hands down. And, of hers, it would be #2 - I'm a sucker for that era's clothing. #4 is stunning as well. And just what is wrong with looking like Jean Harlow? The video shows a splendid range of gowns. I appreciate that she has pieces that could be worn by a 20-year-old blushing virgin (should there be any left) and others that would be appropriate for a woman my age (which is significantly older).

The Badly Mishpocha collection is okay - nothing to write home about, though at least nothing is unflattering. But, guys? It's too weird when the model moves to the left and the bodice moves to the right.

Vera Wang's stuff is awful! For someone with her reputation as a bridal designer, she sure turned out some junk. #2 makes the bride look like she took the wrong turn on the way to the delivery room. And so many of these designs have too much extraneous material, particularly at the hip and butt, which are the last places you want extra bulk! #6 has beautiful lines, but that black growth on the shoulder has to go (same with #7). (I must say, though, that there were some much nicer things in the video - though there were also some that were much worse!)

DolceLorenzo said...

"The Badly Mishpocha collection.."

Badly Mishpoka?

ROFLMAO.

"It's too weird when the model moves to the left and the bodice moves to the right."

I totally agree with you.

What a fabulous and happy post, guys!

Monique Lhullier, yes, yes, yes, hands down. What a fabulous collection! And she sounds so unpretentious and down-to-earth.

Agree with Lilithcat, some nicer and far worse things in the videos.

When I went wedding dress shopping, I hated every single last dress I tried on, and I wasn't about to ask my parents to take out a second mortgage to buy a dress I'd wear once (actually twice), so I had a talented dressmaker make a custom dress for me. It was a lot simpler than those other beasts. I'm a chunky monkey and Disney princess dresses made me look like a walking marshmallow. Blech.

Anonymous said...

I disagree that Vera's "touches of black" look good. I think they look like cancerous growths. Not something you want on a wedding gown.

Sewing Siren said...

Yes, The Lhuillier collection is the best. The "Josephine" and the lace one with the bolero are the best.
Vera Wang used to do such innovative things for the wedding market. Now it looks as if she is not even trying.
Is the strapless trend (for wedding gowns)ever going to die? That's been going on for about 10 years and I say enough!

There is nothing that I am less interested in. Being a gay man, I cannot by lay, get married to my partner of 8 years and if I did, I wouldn't be wearing a dress. This is boring.

Monique Lhuillier dresses are truly timeless and have a refined elegance. My sister bought one for her wedding dresses and they can be costly but worth every penny.

lisasabatier said...

Ok, the only thing I am less interested in for myself than a wedding dress is a maternity dress, however, loved, loved Monique's, especially #2 and #5, (it is sorta doilyish, but so pretty), not crazy about #1. B-M, ok, Vera, I didn't like even a single one.

Oh my God, my daughter got married last fall and I still can't stomoch any wedding talk.

However, I will say that I loved the "harlott" line b/c I'm sure that's from the wonderful Bettie Davis movie where, as a single young woman, she wears a red dress to an event where only white gowns are acceptable for a presentable young lady of her stature. Right?

Can't remember the name of the damn movie.

sewing siren, I completely agree about the strapless trend. I absolutely love a few of the ones shown in the Vera Wang video, but I hate hate hate the "cabbage rose" tumors. They look like something from Star Trek fell off the ceiling and glommed onto the dresses. And why do the models all look like they ran into Kleinfeld's to try on dresses with their hair pinned back and no makeup?

Badgly Mischka -- eh. Not to mention meh.
But Badly Mishpocha -- love it!

The winner by a long shot is Monique Lhuillier. There are some other gorgeous ones in the video.

I recently had to assist my best friend in the selection of a bridal gown for her second wedding.
She wanted something reminiscent of Ashley Judd's Armani "Linda Porter" dress from De-Lovely. Yes, the "Harlow", bias-cut thing... Only one little problemo.. my friend is a size 16 and apple-shaped...
Making the dress would have been a doozey (bias cut, silk duchesse, long -distance, by September.. 'nough said). And just the fabric would have wiped her 500dollar budget So I suggested the bias cut Vionnet-esque dress by Isaac Mizrahi at Target.. 129 glorious bucks and available up to an 18!!!!!
Of all these I like the coat one and the Harlow one.
I recently saw a really cool braidal outfit that looked like a Joan Crawford boudoir outfit with a fox collar and cuffs and that had palazzo pants. I really digged that.
My pick? A victorian silhouetted skirt, a Vivienne Westwood "Queen Elizabeth the Ist" T-shirt, a victorian ridding top hat and booties and a corset belt.
Are most other women devoid of rock and roll edge at the time of their wedding or am I the only weird one?
The majority of these gowns are a bit too traditional for me and the purple Wang one looks like a regular evening gown.
We did an evening gown assignment for my design/sketching class last week and the other 12 gowns with the exception of mine looked like coloured versions of those or Bob Mackie's for Barbie.
Mine was transgressive.....
Hammer and sickle, chiffon camo...
I am NUTS!
Love ya,
Milla

Am I the only one who is really tired of strapless wedding gowns with Mae West skirts? Everything (except Monique Lullhier's #2) looks so same-ol, same-ol to me.

The good news is that I'm already married, and I have sons, so I doubt I will have to go wedding gown shopping any time soon.

Gorgeous Things said...

Sorry Sewing Siren - I missed your post before I put my comment up. I'm so glad to see others are tired to death of the strapless wedding gown look!

Unknown said...

I love the purple gown. My wedding dress (last November) was light blue. I'm 36 and can get married in a color I look in if I want to (white makes me look like death).

And the coat dress is a step in the right direction. I had my dressmaker cobble my dress from 3 different patterns because there's no such thing as a formal gown with sleeves. Again, 36--no desire to show the upper arm flab.

Wedding dresses are tough, though--so many of the clients want a Disney dress that the designers are restricted by that.

Why do some of the dresses in the stills not appear in the videos??

After watching all the videos, I found both Bagley Mischka's and Monique Lhuillier's collections to be equally so lovely with very few misses.

Vera Wang. Uggh. As so many have pointed out, that #2 is so astonishingly awful, the worst dress of any of the three. A very few were ok on the video.

Mom said...

So many of those dresses, I thought to myself, "What would Mr. O'Bannion have said if he saw me coming down the aisle toward him, wearing that?" And I had to answer, "He would have burst out in guffaws." Not the effect one is going for in a bridal march.

And Wang #2? That's what God made diuretics for, honey.

Anonymous said...

On the dresses: I'm so glad I'm not getting married. Lhullier's though, are my idea of perfect -- girly and a little different without screaming "LOOK AT ME! IT'S MY DAY!!! LOOK AT ME DAMNIT!"

I read on some website for a high-end bridal shop that Vera's dresses tend to be very poorly made, and that BG's tend to have the highest quality of workmanship (and enough obviously good handwork to justify the price). Their take on it (and I wish I could recall who they are) was that Vera's stuff was pretty, simple, and really overpriced.

One other observation: why must even bride models look fierce? Brides do not want to look fierce on their wedding day. Beautiful, beaming, happy, yep. Fierce, upset, and really really hungry? Not so much. Someone tell these ladies to smile.

One other other observation: honeys, I don't think that's black trim on the dress. I think it's green. When I clicked on the photos, the brides looked like they'd walked under an overturned salad bowl.

You are right Jen, the full skirt is perfect for the tiny waisted bride, especially if young.
It only looks "Disney" if it has all the bells and whistles, you know -flounces, ruffles, bows, beads , trains, ect..

I had a strapless dress and I am proud of it!

I know that they are getting way overdone, but I am quite selfconscious of my lower half and very proud of my upper half. I wanted to show off my arms shoulders and upper chest. Also, I got married outdoors when it was 100 degrees so I would have died with any kind of sleeve (sweaty armpit stains on ivory satin...holy god!)

Just trying to defend my boring dress although I would pick a different dress if I was getting married today :)

I could do without the fungal growth - a ruffled mass of mushrooms is not attractive in any color. And they all need to be hemmed up a bit. I don't get the whole "drama drape and drag inches along the floor" look. Most brides I know are nervous enough without tripping their way through the day.

Monique's models need to eat sandwiches before their weddings. Some of them look as if they've been marooned on desert islands for a few months.

Anyway, Models aside, I am in agreement with TLo on the "Meh" of the Badgley-Mischka dresses. I'm not a fan of Veras, and I feel that some of the heavy draping, etc, might deter some women from her gowns because they want to look petite on their big days. Overall, I like Monique's collection the best. But, to be honest, I didn't love anyone's collections.

It is true that most women (even edgy ones) tend to the conservitive and traditional when picking a dress to marry in. But the notion of it being the bride's day and all about the "bride" is a fairly recent one.
I personally never gave a thought about a wedding dress, until of course someone ask me to marry them. At that time I assumed we would just go to the King County court house and get hitched. He came from a more traditional family, so we hopped in the old bus, tooted down to Texas, and had a familia wedding that is kind of legendary those parts.
I made my own dress, his vest, and carried flowers from my mothers garden. We had a picnic style reception under the live oaks (but no sprial ham). The Morale's sang to an out of tune guitar. Everybody got a little drunk and someone broke their leg. Yes, a good time was had by all.

Anonymous said...

breasts anyone? How bout an ass or just general curves...SOMEWHERE! I thought brides were happy, do you think most of them look angry because they are dying for some red meat and maybe a cookie? I really wish American designers would actually dress women higher than a size -3.5. The dresses were pretty (some of them) but come on people - anorexia at its finest.

Anonymous said...

I do not like the grey Vera Wang gown-what a dreary color.

Not too fond of the Monique Lhuillier No.1 either, with the hip flounces. That's a look that is not going to flatter any but the most toothpick-like brides.

This does bring back memories of the fights my mother and I had about wedding gowns. The woman actually stopped talking to me after one of them....

But how would Miss Michael Kors respond in the jduging - how can a MOB dress be too MOB?
