Here Come the Bridesmaids

Poor Kevin. We can feel his frustration sweating out of our TV screen. It's a palpable "Who do I have to fuck to win something?" sort of anger. Of course, that's quickly followed by "I hope it's a woman, because I'm straight!"

This could have been the winner, although once again, there's mild disagreement between T and Lo.

Before we go any further, we have to mention now (because it's the only shot of them we have), those shoes are awful with that outfit. Further proof that Kevin is straight. Bobby Trendy notwithstanding, the gays tend to be damn good at accessorizing.

Let's start with the criticism before we get to the praise: that bustier top is poorly fitted and looks cheap. Granted, it's made out of a frigging Hershey's Kiss pillow so looking cheap was almost an inevitability.

But look at the rest of it. That was all cheap fabric but he managed to make it look chic and, well, we can't go so far as to say it looks expensive but it at least doesn't look highly flammable.

It's a great little design, though. Love the little silver ruffled hem and 3/4 length sleeves with the little flare at the end. Thing is, even though it could have won, we think the judges skipped over it because it just looked too much like real clothes and they were clearly looking for whimsy, or as they called it, "joy."

Honestly, the bullshit criteria they come up with from week to week. "Where's the joy?" Give us a break.

How could Kit NOT use the Kit-Kats? A perfect choice for her. We just wish she'd found away to only use the "Kit" part of the logo. It would have come off wittier.

Which kind of ties into our main criticism of this look: whimsical, yes, but a little too obvious.

We were spoiled by Sissy Bear's masterful use of the logos and we can't help looking at this and thinking "Couldn't you have done a little more with them?" She looks a bit too much like a walking advertisement.

Although, credit where it's due: The Rolos belt was pretty damn ingenious.

The other factor we have to compliment is the styling. Kit almost always makes great styling choices, which makes sense because she's a stylist. Both the hair and the killer boots really sold the look. Without them, it would have come off a lot weaker.

Then again...

Just sayin'.

Along with Kevin, Kit's another one we think deserves a win by now. She's been pretty consistently good throughout the competition and unlike a lot of the other designers, she shows real style in her choices. Step it up, Baby Jane. We know you've got it in you.

C'mon guys: "Kit" is a nickname. The given name on her birth certificate is obviously "KitKat."

Whoa! Does anyone else see the package on that model?

Kit's looked straight-up old skool punk rock, and Rami's looked like Judy Jetson.

That said, I agree that Kit should've had a win by now.

Thank you for commenting on the Rolo belt. Jillian was not the only one that used candy in her design! Sheesh...

I tend to think that Kevin is the most deserving non-winner in the contest so far. And despite the fact that he's prone to declaring his heterosexuality at every opportunity, I was sorta touched by the fact that he's lonely in his now solo and gayless apartment. That, and he was totally hot first thing in the morning when Tim woke him up to take him to Candyland. Grrrrrowl. He's a fun little butch metrosexual, and I like him.

I liked Kit's look. The hair, the boots, the belt. All of it. I think she knocked it out of the park. It had "whimsy," but also clearly a "style."

Kevin's was ok. You're right about it looking too much like "real clothes," but that was what they were told to do. The "whimsy and joy and fun" criteria seemed to get tacked on when it was judgment time. If the judges wanted "whimsy," they should have said that from the get go. I hate when they throw in random "rules" after the garments are finished.

Anywho, I keep picking Kit in the Fantasy Runway game to win challenges. I really need her to step up! I'm getting creamed over there. By the same token, I need Ricky to be auf'd very soon. I keep picking him to lose.

These fall into the bla category for me, although I agree that both are capable of a win.

Kit's design has a proportion that's off. That oufit makes the models waist look a mile long.

I don't see anybody on the planet wearing Kevin's foil-looking top anywhere, at any time.

Anonymous said...

C'mon! Foil-hat wearing women everywhere would love a foil bustier for those formal occasions!

Kit and Kevin have been pretty darn solid throughout so far. I hope they make it to the finals.

Who do you guys think could go the longest:
Kevin without declaring his heterosexuality,
Ricky without crying, or Christian without commenting on how great he is?

Loved both of these. LOVED the styling on Kit's.

I said it on another post - and agree with everyone here - the judges said the clothes had to be wearable. Not whimsical. Not witty. Not JOYOUS. Seriously. WTF?

Anonymous said...

OMG, awesome post! And yes, the shoes. That was the first thing I thought about when I saw Kevin's model. Kevin is growing on me (in a chia pet kind of way) despite the constant protestations of straightery.

Anonymous said...

Alas for Kevin, he committed the most basic blunder you can commit on a Bravo reality show -- his outfit did nothing to highlight the sponsor's logos or product. No wonder it only got about three seconds of air time.

Cedar said...

Really? On the boots? I thought those were the weakest part of her outfit. They just looked so heavy and obvious, and really dragged the outfit down. They were the opposite of whimsy. Something lighter would have sold the look better.

Sewing Siren said...

Kit's outfit is cute and has the same kind of whimsy that Rami's had, but lacks the perfect execution. I agree that the styling on her model is the best. It looks to me like everyone else styled their models so seriously. I wonder if Elisa had put looped braids and pink blush on her model if it would have saved her..
Kevin's garment was probably the closest to real clothes. And he most likely interpreted Tim's remark that it has to be "wearable" to mean street fashion. It is similar to the first dress he produced though, isn't it? To me it is remarkable only because it was made out of pillows.I think they are deliberately vague sometimes on what is expected from the designers just to give themselves a freer hand when judging.

I loved Kevin's. I love him! He's hot, talented, low-key, low-drama...I hope he stays for a while.
Kit's was cool, a bit too punk rock for me, but it's 100% her design and aesthetic.

I agree, that drives me crazy. It's not fair.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, one more thing...

But this time I blame it on Zac Posen. He's the one who started the whole whimsical bullshit. Did he get the memo that it had to be wearable?

Anonymous said...

Both Kit and Kevin have really grown on me. I kind of thought I was going to be sick to death of Kit and the Kevin was going to be lackluster, but frankly, I now see both of them (especially Kit) as strong contenders for the final 3.

I thought Kit certainly should have been in the top 3 for this challenge instead of Jillian, and I think if she hadn't been outclassed in terms of logo use (or, you're right, used just the "Kit" part), she might have been a winner.

But god is her hair ever awful.

Anonymous said...

As soon as Kit's design hit the runway, you knew it was hers. In a good way.

Anonymous said...

I just wish the judges would be more specific about the challenges! Like saying " we want you to make this joyful", or " We want you to make this look like real clothes, chic and stylish" right from the begining. I think kevin and Christian thought they would win becuase their outfits looked the most like real clothing (well ugly clothing).

THe game they play with what they are looking for is annoying.

So, I'm not a big Kit fan. Consistent, yes. Winner, haven't seen it.

But I do believe Kevin is the bridesmaid of the group.

Loved his denim hot pant shorts, even though he almost had a melt down (and at least he was part of a winning team).

Loved his canary makeover outfit, but he was my second place contender, cause I picked Ms. Fierce for the win.

Also, liked his chocolate outfit, cause it was definitely fashionable, even though it had its flaws (I liked Chris for the win, cause even though Rami's was technically great - that's mostly been the case already - Chris broke his pattern of costumes and definitely delivered fashion - it looked good, fit was great, and as Nina said, ready for the fashion pages) but I digress.

Stronger believer in Kevin than Kit ... but he will have to work hard to pull off a win.

(And wasn't it hilarious when he left JSP hanging for the handshake? Oh, so completely clueless ... and yes, he definitely has a problem with accessorizing)

Just sayin-

Help. Where is that just sayin' picture from? Just askin'

I'm just pleased that they're staying away from team challenges for the most part. The more fashions going down the runway the better!

Now that we're halfway through, I think Tim G may be right about the talent level this year.

Kit, Kevin, Rami, Ricky, Jillian and Chris all turned in genuinely good work this challenge. Christian didn't, but we know he's capable of it. Sweet P and Vayaya have been more consistently weak, but they've both turned out cute and or good clothes too. (Sweet P's dress for the weight loss challenge, the Donna Karan dress and the Elisa collaboration; for Vayaya the first dress and the menswear challenge). There's not an Angela or a Vincent left, and on the whole, that's good.

On the other hand, I don't know that I can say this year matches last year's final four in skill. I do kind of think of last season as the apex in terms of talent.

I like Kevin, even with the 'I'm straight, I swear' protests. But this outfit, while serviceable, was really just like anything you could find at Loehman's.

Kit's was more interesting. If I was a bad girl, I'd wear it out, and be trick or treating around town.

--GothamTomato

P.S.- I have to say, I don't understand why Jillian has gotten tagged for being 'unemotional', etc, when I don't see much difference between her personality & Kit's. Not that I think Kit is unemotional either. I just think they're both just nice, but quiet personalities. After last season's histrionics, that aspect of the show is actually a relief.

To anon 1:02 - it's from Superman II!

They're both strong designers and have presented decent designs. I hope one of them make it to the finals.

Kevin has grown on me, or maybe it's just that my intense initial distaste for him has receded. He seems to have chilled out from his early strident assholishness. His designs, though, don't excite. They just seem...competent. I'm still waiting to be wowed.

I think Kit's a bit of a sleeper. In fact I picked her for my win this week just 'cause I thought that maybe she's the missing 6th designer in the previews and it would just make sense that, with her taste, she could appeal to a teen. I like her. She seems nice.

Hutchlover said...

Honestly, I thought Kit's was terrible.

It was boring, and other than the Rolo belt (Kevin used Rolo's also as his buttons), all she did was glue on wrappers - ala Christian.

Really, other than the Tiki Barber challenge, she's been MOR. She's road meat soon. (Hopefully after Ricky & Vicborya & SweetP, though)

And I don't think Kevin's mentioned his straightness since episode 3, and that was probably due to editing, so I think the subject can be lessened or dropped.

This are too many Superman II references on PR! Santino was a dead ringer for the leader of those Krypton Karrying bad guys. Check out SII & PR Barbie challenge.

To me, Kit's was just too busy. Her ass got kicked by better use of the Hershey's logo (Chris) and much better use of disparate materials (Rami). So middle of the pack was an appropriate finish for this garment, I think.

I hated the boots and thought they made the whole outfit look really heavy and clunky. The length of the skirt combined with the clomping boots made me think, for a brief instant, "Dowdy."

Kevin's was nice, very wearable, but not terribly innovative. Middle of the pack was also appropriate for him as far as I was concerned.

Anonymous said...

I thought Kevin should have gotten the win until I saw Rami's close-ups. Still, if the judges really did want wearable clothes then Kevin was robbed.

I like Kit more and more. Her designs are certainly not my style but she's focused and amiable. I bet her co-workers love her.

When they interviewed Kevin and he said, "At least once a show I have to say that I am going to kill him," about Christian, it seemed kinda out of the blue. Sure, it was tongue in cheek, and I could see how Christian could get on your nerves, but have we seen any of this animosity?

I think the Dutchess, NinaGarcia, Heidi must watch the runway show and then they decide what they need to do to keep their pets in the running, hence the tripe about "whimsy", "joy", blahblahblah.

I hate when they throw in random "rules" after the garments are finished.

Me three or four on this! I'm not sure if Zac Posen is to blame, either -- all the judges seemed to be on the "fun" bandwagon, and with the heavy editing there's no way to know if Zac started or cheerled that.

At least Chris defended himself from that. If he'd been auf'ed for not being whimsical enough, I'd have ripped my TV off the wall.

It's exactly like the "Skinny" challenge. They're told to use the fabric, and Jillian doesn't and gets praised. They're told to make "everyday" clothes, and several don't, and get praised (Jillian again -- she specifically described that as a party dress).

I think Kevin was being humorous with that line about having to say he's going to kill Christian on every episode. In fact, although it's hard to tell from the language, I got the feeling he was reacting to being told by the producers to react more to Christian's annoyingness.

Anonymous said...

P.S. to add that I agree with bitchybitchybitchy above -- the judges do what they need to keep their pets in the running.

What I don't get is why the pets are pets, anyway.

Not sure what to say about the lack of Kit love. Her first dress was well done, her men's wear- right on point, and her BITTEN outfit was cute. I far prefered it over V-Ya's big ole dress. And she stole the show with the dress she sent down the runway in the team challenge. It was gorgeous and perfectly fitted. And her dress was quite cute in the weight loss challenge and seemed to fit her client's personality very well, and Kit styled her well too. I really don't know why she hasn't gotten more attention. They seem to overlook almost everything she's done so far.

I thought Kevin's had a nice silhouette ,but I really felt the brown "velvet" was in the end awful. I know it was one of the limitations of the challenge, but even dear Elisas, would have looked much better if they had not chose that fabric.
Criticism aside I too think Kevin can deliver.
Kits was my fave. I think Hershey's should team up with her and mass produce the skirt and bustier for the general public.

Is it just me, or does Kit's model's hair look like a Hershey's kiss?

I also thought that Kevin should have won. I was really surprised that he wasn't even in the top.

What, are you joking?? PRG's entire Raison D'etre can be distilled down to the following:

1) find a character idiosyncracy;

2) blow it up into the broadest of stereotypes;

3) beat the hell out of it!

Silly person!

I loved Kit's outfit. Much better than Bullerbot 3000's. Kevin's not so much.

His was tired and could have been from the Jaqueline Smith collection at Kmart.

Kit's shoulda been a contender.

Anonymous said...

Kevin's is a fine outfit, but rather ordinary. It may have been in keeping with the instruction to make something wearable, but there wasn't much about it that was very creative or interesting.

I like Kit's belt, but I agree with the poster above who commented about the proportion. It makes the model look like she has a freakishly long torso.

Kanani said...

Oh, all the discord in the T Lo house! I'm sure by now you've drawn the line down the room.

I've always been pulling for Kit. She takes risks, her style is always fun and has a point of view that's hers. I hadn't noticed the rollo belt --good going! I agree that her design was too literal.

I agree that both Kit and Kevin deserve a win at some point. I feel as though both Ya Ya and Sweet P are sinking.

Kanani said...

Oh... and I think Tim should just stop it with the "wearable" phrase. It just kind of sucks all the fun out of it, and this is a group that desperately needs to have a syringe of fun injected into its mix.

Kit's dress was a bad cross of Chris's piece and Rami's. Just not good enough compared to the other two.

Kevin's was good, but yeah, the judges wanted whimsy, so Rami was a shoo-in.

Can we get a challenge where designers get 200 $ to shop at mood then design something beautiful INDIVIDUALLY please? Cut the crap, cut the cutesy or bizarre challenges. I want to see clothes!
