Bad Mommy fights crime!

Darlings, Laura's first comic strip is up at iVillage and it's FABULOUS.

"The Case of the Party Primping Predicament -
Help, Laura! With the holiday season in full swing, I have so many parties to go to. I want to be glamorous. But, as a mom, I don't have the time or the money to put together an entire glam wardrobe. What can I do?"

You can read it here.

PLUS...

A fantastic interview with La Bennett at Parents.com. Some excerpts:

Parents.com: You seem so put together. Do you ever have days where you just wear sweats and no makeup?
LB: I don't have help on the weekends and sometimes if I think I am not going to be leaving the house I have a pair of stretch velvet pants I wear. My nanny laughs because they're sort of upgraded sweat pants. But I think it's a slippery slope. If I am dressed dumpy, I am going to eat badly and act dumpy. It's such a simple thing to get dressed and feel better about yourself.

Parents.com: Ever have mommy guilt about working so much?
LB: As a parent I think that it's great for my kids to see that I am taking advantages of all these opportunities. They have a healthy, successful role model. I love the idea that more moms are starting businesses and doing things for themselves. Women are amazing. Men could never handle all of the things that women do. It never gets easier, but women keep doing it and take whatever comes. We need to do a good job as parents but also have to be responsible to ourselves and live our lives to their fullest potential.

Parents.com: Venture a guess who will win this season?
LB: I'm still trying to decide. There are some contestants who think that they are all that and I don't think they are that at all.

Parents.com: Like who?
LB: I think Christian with the wacky hair is way too young and too full of himself, and he's making a mistake by not taking Tim's advice. I think Victorya and Rami are looking pretty good to me at the moment.

Just like La Laura, the comic is fabulously glamorous! I love it, and feel that I simply must get a red satin trenchcoat immediately.

Okay, I love Laura, and I think the comic strip is fabulous, but can I vent for a moment?

I am a little tired of the "moms should be glam too!" message. I realize it's supposed to be empowering, and Laura has said it's about women taking good care of themselves, but sometimes it can simply feel like another form of pressure to fit into a certain mold or to achieve some impossible standard.

I am a working mother, and there are days when I feel beseiged by hundreds of critical messages from many external sources, mainly in the media: be a great parent! be a creative cook! be a loving spouse and a super-efficient employee! be a MILF! And now I'm supposed to f@#king dress beautifully too? I try, believe me, I try to make the best of the wardrobe I have, but you know what?

Some days, it just isn't practical or possible, for reasons of money, time, or just flat-out exhaustion. And I'll thank you for not making me feel guilty about that.

Thanks for listening to that rant.

Kanani said...

Saskla,

I know what you mean, but what I think she means is that you have to take care of yourself.

And that means taking time for yourself, stealing moments --even if it's minutes, where you're focused on yourself, something you desire or need.

I know it's not easy. I have two. One has the same mental illness as his father. Sometimes it's a slog, but still... glamor has to take the form of putting on my red trench, or walking the dog and making sure I do so with a bounce in my step. Last night, glam took place at Target where I found the Fall belts on clearance for $3.98!
Keep going, Saskla!

Anonymous said...

Amanda Kin the Mannequin? Bwa ha ha!

Anonymous said...

Well said, Kanani. I don't think what Laura calls being responsible to yourself and living to your full potential has to necessarily include being glam. If that's not important or practical for you, screw it. Watch glorious old movies, read John Cain novels. Glam can be a spectator sport.

Anonymous said...

Remember Robert and Kayne snarking on Laura in the "dining room" that night? No one can admit they were telling truths and as such are good observers of personalities.

The most critical observers (right/wrong, beautiful/ugly, et al) in general make the best artists. As such, having known Laura at probably her worst, Robert and his awesome aesthtic are perfect for this.

TLo, take the night off. You deserve it after the barrage of the past few days.

well, not exactly. I would say that the majority of the designers, even the good ones, are mostly producing variations on a theme with each passing challenge (Christian and Jillian spring to mind). In fact, she specifically names Christian as someone she isn't thrilled with. Not that her favorites aren't also repetitive, but I doubt that's why she likes them.

I love Laura. I love you guys (TLo). I love that Laura inspired you to start this fab blog. I love Tim Gunn.

But his show, not so much.

And now Laura's at it too.

I just have one question: what is it with these darn trench coats? Tranch coats never looked good on anybody but Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn. Double breasted with sash/belt = bulky excess fabric tied around the middle. Amd all the extra little straps and buckles and buttons and doodads just make the whole thing look like a fussy piece of army surplus. Even in red satin, if you ain't Audrey, it'll bulk you up where you don't want to be bulked.

Nope, do not get the trench coat thingy, do not get it at all.

Seriously
I am getting ready to purge my closet but at this point what do you replace it with when you live in a place that never gets lower than 80 degrees???

In a perfect world I would have Tim, Laura and Uli show up at my front door (Veronica Webb need not apply....) and completely rework my wardrobe.

Then we'd all go out and make some REALLY bad decisions at 3AM, but now none of them would include capri pants.

The pressure to not look my age feels huge, and the Laura's of the world only make it harder.

When I was younger, I swore I would never let my body achieve the shape of my mother. But, you know, sometimes life happens.

They have cut my breast. I have undergone treatments that changed the chemistry of my body. Each day I take a hormone inhibitor that contains steroids so that the cancer won't return....

and you know, I am starting to look like my mother. I don't look glamorous. I don't wear pretty clothes. Nothing out there fits the weird shape that my estrogen-deprived body has created.

This isn't like those make-over shows. This is real. I live it every day, and I work hard to not define myself by looking in the mirror.

Instead, I try to focus on the fact that smart people think I am smarter, that friends know that I am there for them, that my home always has home-made soup ready for a visitor that stops by, and I throw one hell of a party.

I love Project Runway because I love watching creativity at work. I love this blog because it cuts to the chase.

This season seems to be loosing the creativity, and I miss that. Who remembers Chloe's plant dress? That was brilliance. Nothing this season has come even close to that moment.

But back to the original point, I admire Laura's "POV", but when is it okay to just be me?

I have tried on trench coats in stores from here to Timbuktu (okay, not literally, but you get my drift), and there isn't one that doesn't make me look like a dumpling. I'll stick with my black swing all-weather, thank you very much!

I wish she would blog about this season. I'd love to hear her opinions on everyone.

I love trench coats. They're classic and stylish. You just need to find the right fit and design. I own 3 and wear then everywhere. But I really want that embroidered one that Robert Best gave to Laura. That was lovely!

Anonymous said...

Laura is so right about being fabulously glamorous! I'm disgusted when I see those frumpy soccer moms in their dirty old sweat pants with messy hair and ugly shoes. There's no excuse for going out in public looking like that. It doesn't take much effort to put on some decent clothes, wash your face and wear some lipstick! It's like these women just give up and stop making an effort. Laura Bennett is my hero.

But nothing in life can hurt you if you know what's in your own heart. I didn't do it on a whim to make good TV and I would do it all over the same way with no regrets."

She is correct on all counts. He DID pick on people all season long. He was a relentless, mysogynist bully whose behavior created a hostile work environment that would have gotten him fired from any company.

And he is a pathological liar to boot. One example: That girlfriend (babymama) that he professed such love for - that made some nitwits think, aw, he's so sweet? He dumped her the day after he won the big prize. Left her for his model. The day after!

Laura's also right about karma. He's faded back into deserved obscurity because what self-respecting woman would buy clothes from a pig like him, and who would underwrite him?

Oh, and I believe he cheated on that collection too.

.

GT, here is the thing she absolutely did refer to JS as a "herion addict". While he was on the show he most certainly was not a herion addict okay? On the previous thread everyone was joking about 3am bad decision making, I personaly am not of the camp that thinks you should have to pay for the bad decisions for the rest of your life (although unfortunately sometimes you do).
As for the rest of your post, I was no Jeffery fan. Some of his dresses were good, like the couture dress and some stunk ,like the Miss America one. I didn't think the newspaper one that he crowed about was all that either.I do think he probably had someone sew most his collection for him. And I think he was full of shit. But that does not make it right to refer to him as a herion addict.
I like Laura and I like her fashion mantra and I am sure she gets tired of being ask that same old question about the cheating (as far as I know she never brings it up herself). Maybe she just lost her patience, but her choice of words was poor.

It is possible that is what she meant Zak, but it isn't very clear. The way I read it was that all of the sudden the public percieved *her* as a horrible bitch for taking on a herion addict and she was shocked by their negative reaction (to her).
When I read it I recoiled, that's all I'm saying. I didn't call her classless that was an anonymous poster.
I realize when a person is interviewed that everything they say is not printed verbatim. Maybe what she actually said was clearer. I am damn sure she is sick of talking about it.

Anonymous said...

Simply divine, darlings! She's fabulous, isn't she?

GothamTomato said...

I think that Zak was correct. If you look at her quote in context, that is what she said.

And even if that wasn't exactly, precisely what she meant, why does it matter? It was Jeffrey who made a public issue of his alleged backstory, including the drugs; using it as a ploy for sympathy & an excuse for his bad behavior. So why is it wrong for someone else to mention it?

You know, it's not an either-or. Jeffrey Sebelia was a sadistic jerk. Laura Bennett makes beautiful dresses but she has a vicious streak a mile long that she doesn't think she needs to hide in her interviews. I understand the need for self-promotion, and her clothes are fantastic, but she's got to work on her class level a bit. She's not in competition any more, where cutting people down to their face was a successful strategy.

gothamtomato, how do you know this?

Is this a fact or just some rumor you heard?

Unless you know Melanie, Jeffrey and Marilinda personally, I doubt you have any insight into their private lives.

If you have an axe to grind with Jeffrey, fine -- but please don't drag Melanie, Harrison and Marilinda into this. Because that's what you're doing.

You are accusing Marilinda of being a homewrecker and having an affair with a man who was in a committed relationship with the mother of his child. How do you think Melanie, Marilinda or god forbid Harrison (when he gets older) would feel reading your words?

I am astounded by the level of animosity and bitterness that random TV viewers can harbor -- even years later -- for reality contestants. It's simply not healthy!

I didn't hear anyone referring to Jeffrey as sweet but that's really besides the point. If you want to rip Jeffrey's or anyone else's collection to shreds, that's fine but what does Jeffrey's (or any other contestant's) personal life have to do w/ anything?

gothamtomato said...

Jeffrey was kind of an Ass much of the time, but Santino always bugged me much more.

Anyway, Jeffrey definitely deserved the win. It's funny and kind of sad that some people still can't get over that ... including, apparently, Laura.

Hate is never classy, right?

Anonymous said...

Laura needs to get over it. Grudges are petty and unattractive. Sucking on those sour grapes will only cause more wrinkles.

It reminds me of what happened on Top Chef 2. Marcel was rude and annoying but Ilan and Elia were freakishly obsessed with him. I rolled my eyes when they accused him of cheating in the finale. It was like a last-ditch effort to get back at him. So childish!

GothamTomato said...

It has been reported in more than one place.

As for the rest: I don't harbor any bitterness towards him, and the fact that I simply do not like his actions on the show, etc is just that. I was simply responding (maybe too strongly) to those posters taking her answers out of context. Maybe I should have just ignored them.

The reality is; I have no horse in this race. Had I been a judge, I would not have given the prize to either Jeffrey or Laura - which is neither here nor there.

Anonymous said...

"It has been reported in more than one place."

-------------------------------

Really? Where? Could you post a link? I highly doubt it's been "reported" by any reputable source. It sounds like petty gossip to me (perhaps even leaked by Laura Bennett herself?)

I prefer to get my facts straight before I go around labeling people home-wreckers or spouting "facts" about other people's private lives with such authority.

It amuses me how random people can read blurbs on gossip blogs and think they know the intimate details of someone's personal life.

Ripping into Jeffrey's clothes or his treatment of Angela's mother on the show is one thing... but slandering Marilinda and spreading malicious gossip that is hurtful to Melanie and Harrison? That really crosses the line.

I also took the "horrible bitch" and "heroin addict" comment as hyperbole, not fact or attack.

It's well established that JEffrey dumped Melanie right after the show. It was widely reported in nymag and other place and Melanie herself talked briefly about it on her myspace page. As for whether he wound up with Marilinda, that was also widely reported based mostly on speculation at gossip sites. gothamtomato didn't say anything that hasn't been said plenty of times before.

Anonymous said...

asian spices, nothing was ever "widely established" nor "reported" outside gossip blogs.

Isn't this entire story about Marilinda's sordid affair with Jeffrey just idle speculation and gossip? I'm amazed that people are repeating this as fact.

I've been on Melanie's Myspace friends list for years. She never talked about her break-up with Jeffrey. Not once. She changed her relationship status to single (this was months after the show ended and NOT the day after as "gothamtomato) claims) and some friends left comments consoling her about her break up with Jeffrey. That is all.

There was never any mention of Marilinda or Jeffrey "dumping" her. For all we know, Melanie could have dumped him. The only thing that's been "established" is that they broke up.

Anonymous said...

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Marilinda also had a boyfriend at the time. She was in a relationship then. He was gorgeous too!

Just because she's friends with Jeffrey doesn't mean that she was banging him. Not that anyone ever bothered to ask the poor girl before slandering her character! I feel sorry that she was dragged into this mess.

Anonymous said...

I just have two questions:

- Do we really need to spend all this time talking about ONE particular thing that Laura said in her interview? I mean, there's the comic strip, the gorgeous illustrations by Robert best, her long interview where she ALSO talks about parenthood, her career... Can we talk about something else?

- And why is it that every single time someone (especially Laura Bennett) criticizes Jeffrey all of a sudden we have this avalanche of anonymous posts defend him?

Anonymous said...

God, I hope my anonymous post calling Jeffrey a "sadistic jerk" isn't counted as one of them defending him!

Anonymous said...

Put me down on the side of: Laura was just giving examples of how she perceived people reacting.

"LB: Jeffrey picked on people all season and suddenly I was the horrible bitch taking on a heroin addict. I was really surprised by people's reactions."

Would people be less inclined to attack her if she had put air quotes around it like this:

LB: Jeffrey picked on people all season and suddenly I was the "horrible bitch" taking on a "heroin addict." I was really surprised by people's reactions.

Ah ha! Now it seems so much less classless and so much more harmless. You never know the tone of voice or body language she was using in the interview, so we can't know her true intent, but it never occured to me that she was being snarky when I read it and I was really surprised to see all the posts taking this tiny comment so seriously.

Okay...now on to the other comments I agree with: Trench coats are not for the short, slightly plump girls among us. Really. And red satin would just make us look like jolly cranberries slipping along in the snow.

Anonymous said...

Defending Jeffrey? Oh, please! I think Jeffrey is a jerk but I loathe the way that petty gossip is passed off as "fact" these days. I mean do you believe everything you read on Perez Hilton too?

Somebody else emphatically stated that Marilinda and Jeffrey had an affair and that he dumped Melanie the day after the show. I don't understand how that was relevant to this discussion either. However I felt compelled to point out the inaccuracies in those statements. I'm sorry if that ruffled the feathers of you regular posters.

Anonymous said...

Maybe trench coats aren't right for everyone, but Laura was dead on with the importance of a nice dress coat. Your first impression coming through the door is going to be in a coat. Actually, the same is true for everyday. You run into your casual acquaintances (like that fake bitch who never holds the door at your son's preschool) when you're doing errands. I love having a nice coat then. It's like armor.

Men could never handle all of the things that women do.

I think this is really sexist.
Many men DO as much as women, it's just different. I get the feeling that Laura comes from an era where men's efforts were routinely dismissed, thus, a lot of men simply gave up trying. And women discovered that they could "hire" people to do things --so what looks like doing a lot now includes a housekeeper, nanny, and others so that the woman can (like Laura) "take advantage of all these opportunities." In other words, for Laura, driving around a lot signifies to her that she's doing more. She's from and married into a fairly privileged lot.

Do what she may, just don't accuse men of being unable to multi-task. They do.

As for the rest of what she says, it's largely platitudes.

I agree that using his past drug use against him was a shitty thing. I was no fan of Jeff's, but being that he was upfront about it should be enough. Let him wrestle with those demons, she shouldn't bring them out.

If PR were a contest of virtues, there'd be no winners.

I'm sure if anyone dug into Laura's past, they'd find some less than admirable things she'd done, such as this one...which puts her in the line up of malicious gossipers not fit to be writing in a Parent's magazine.

She really needs to be careful with what she says. Because someday it'll hit her in the face. And how!

Ugh. When did this blog get flooded with so much nastiness? I miss the lighthearted bitchiness that appears to have been eclipsed by a much crustier variety--it's like PRGay with a hangover in here!

Back OT: Back in the good old days of Trinny and Tranny on the British What Not to Wear, I learned that a trench is not for the busty gal like myself. They recommended a single breasted, plain front coat, which I eventually translated as a knee-length wool coat from Target with a faux fur collar and cuffs, which I scored off-season for about 20 bucks (gotta love that Isaac Mizrahi line!). I've even been able to wear it while pregnant (with most of the buttons undone, natch). I have a feeling La Laura would approve.
The comic strip is 99 kinds of fab!

Oh please. Writing for people with poor reading comprehension is just plain exhausting.

Nothing Laura said in the interview was mean & nothing the normal posters here said was mean either. (And even if it were, so what? Suddenly he's a delicate flower? Jeffrey chose to make a name for himself by behaving like a misogynist bully on a reality show, and people react to him based on that face that he chose to show the world). And what is Laura, or anyone else, supposed to say when asked about him; answer with every little fact that defines him as a person? Get real.

Beyond that, Jeffrey made all this a public issue by choosing to use it on a reality show. Just as his ex chose make the breakup public by discussing it on her MySpace page. It was THEIR choice to make it all public. No one here said anything out of line.

That's all.

I didn't "rush" here to defend Jeffrey. I read this blog regularly, but the comment threads are long enough already for me to want to bore people with my comments on whether I like or dislike each week's fashions. Sometimes, something just jumps out at you and makes you want to speak up, and this was it.

If you think we're all one person posting multiple times, ask our host to verify IP addresses. They'll tell you if it's all one person and if we're all posting from our sewing stations at Cosa Nostra. Trust me, we're not. If you think Jeffrey Sebelia has to personally recruit people to comment critically on things Laura Bennett has said, all I have to say is welcome to the Internet, dearie. PR has millions of viewers and everyone has opinions, not all of which are that Laura Bennett craps chocolate ice cream. She may be popular here and has done much to cultivate this community, but even her biggest fans have to recognize that she could be polarizing with the way she treated people, and NOT because we think Jeffrey is a saint or because we don't recognize her skill.

No, I'm not a regular member of this community with a pseudonym people recognize, and if that makes my opinion worth less, that's no problem with me. It doesn't make me dishonest or insane, though.

Oh please. Writing for people with poor reading comprehension is just plain exhausting.
Nothing Laura said in the interview was mean & nothing the normal posters here said was mean either.

So, because my opinion differs from yours I have poor reading comprehension? Jeez Louise!

Once again, this is not about Jeffrey. I have watched my sister struggle with bulimia for years and yet it never once occured to me to describe her as just a bulimic. She is a parent, a daughter, a sister, a painter, a creative mind, loving friend, kind soul and yes she is bulimic.

Not everything is black and white or Laura vs Jeffrey!

No, not because your opinion differs, but because you took 2 words entirely out of context. And none of it has anything to do with your sister. Lots of people have problems & addictions and don't whine about them in public, and don't use them as convenient excuses or manipulation tools. They just get on with their lives and stand or fall on their own merit. End of.

Who asked you to write for us? Is this your blog?

FOR ONCE, I wish any discussion about Jeffrey or Jeffrey vs. Laura did not resort to name-calling and cheap diversionary arguments, but I guess that's not possible. This is my last contribution to this thread. I'm done.

I think your efforts at teaching reading comprehension are in vain. It seems there are a number of people who will never understand that Laura was discussing labels inevitably applied to "characters" on a reality show. I think it's pretty clear from the interview that she is saying editing and narrow viewer perception lead to Jeffrey being viewed as the poor, wounded (recovering) addict and by extension to her as the cold, unsympathetic bitch who didn't bolster his fragile ego at every turn. They're never gonna get it. Let's move on, 'cause your comments are usually one of the highlights of these posts!

Thanks. I agree & as soon as I pushed the button to post I realized this myself & should have just moved past already.

In any event, yes, moving on is in order because I believe this post started out involving trench coats & I've been looking for a good one for a loooong time. I can't wear the double-breasted ones; must be single. Can't find just the right one & my old one is starting to look ratty.

So I hope that Laura has come up with the perfect trench to save my wardrobe before spring.

gothamtomato, when did Melanie ever say on her Myspace that Jeffrey cheated on her with Marilinda and dumped her the day after he won? She didn't. Those were YOUR words - not hers. Melanie said they broke up. That is all. The rest is YOUR speculation and conjecture. Please don't put words in Melanie's mouth to justify your vendetta.

Oh, and I suggest you work on your own reading comprehension skills. Melanie never wrote any of the things you claim on her Myspace.
