Best Gal

Tuesday, October 24, 2006 by
As a lot of you know, we had the pleasure and privilege of spending a couple hours at the Bennett-Shelton residence before the finale party. What we might not have mentioned is that we also had the pleasure of stopping by the next morning for coffee and dish. It's amazing how once the kids are off to school that place about triples in size.

At any rate, we'll be talking about our visits next week, but we thought we'd share something that really deserves its own post. Laura loves Robert Best and said so several times. She was raving about his sketches and how gorgeous they are when she remembered something. She went to her files and pulled this out:

It's a sketch of Laura that Robert did. How flipping fabulous is that? We of course immediately begged her for a scan so we could show it to you guys and without a second thought she went over to her scanner and printed this out for us. This is a scan of a scan of an original that was drawn on pattern paper, so it honestly doesn't do the sketch justice.

Still, it's gorgeous, right? A PRG Exclusive!

I wouldn't mind Robert coming back for season 4 and taking a serious shot at being in the final 3/4.

Now he would know what's expected of him and he could train (seriously, I do this kind of work and wouldn't think of even trying out without something akin to athletic training under my belt) toward the end of not boring the judges.

If Daniel Franco can do it...

Using some of Laura's words, that was "Seriously NOT Ugly"... but FABULOUS!

You guys are awesome!

That's it! A new show concept. The auff'ed designers compete against one another to be runners-up. Instead of a show in Bryan Park, they get a motherf*&in' walkoff with their models through the Macy's Herald Square Lingerie section. Malan v. Robert v. Keith. Bring it, babes.

Long-time lurker. Love love love.

I forsee Barbie this season in lace, feathers and a deep V neck.

Wow! So cool! I need to hang out with more creative types. That sketch is far more interesting and glamourous than the card-courtesy-of-whatever-charity-is-soliciting-them I might get from friends and family. :(

I'm 42, I studied architecture, I design and make my own jewelry, and my favorite movie is Auntie Mame.

Laura and I have so much in common.

Yet, she is fabulously glamorous and living in New York City whereas I live in the middle of nowhere, Utah and most often wear clothes sporting muddy paw prints and dog spit.

I must have made a wrong turn somewhere...

Coffe at Laura's...Please tell me she also served up some juicy tidbits about the show. DID Jeffrey pull that craftmanship out of his ass? (easily found, since his head had been up there for so long)

And I KNOW at least one of you had to excuse yourself to use the loo...what's the contents of the medicine cabinet???????

Do hurry and dish, darlings!!!

"Wait...could a Laura Bennett Silkstone Barbie be far behind?"

I got rid of all my Silkstones except for FAO Fashion Editor, and though her hair is too dark auburn, maybe I can pull it back in a little Laura pony tail and pretend. Do you think Laura would ever wear a leopard print skirt? It seems too common for her. I'll have to hunt for something with lace.

Robert's latest Silkstones look great, better than in a long time, especially Pink Ribbon and Lady of the Manor. I saw him several years ago at NYC FAO Schwartz doing a Silkstone signing but I didn't have the nerve to approach him! He's definitely beefier now than he was then but just as cute!

Zing!

Good one. Looks like in the pic Laura might be looking down at them and laughing with us.

Probably took Robert longer to find a pencil than to do the sketch, and yet: wow.

It would take me a whole lot longer since I'd have to find someone to hire to do it.

When one of the someones on this delicious blog called Jeffrey's green concoction "a straight jacket for a circus whore" (never laughed so hard in my life!)-- Angela's pants also fit the category. Circus diaper maybe?

Hi Guys...

Love you!

Robert Best was my fave this past season. I was sickened when he was voted off. I guess he was like a deer in headlights everytime he had to design. Maybe the pressure was too much.

Love Laura, too. She is fabo.

Can't wait for you to go back and blog the other seasons!

Makes waiting for season 4 more bearable and I don't have to wait until every Wednesday night to get my next morsel. Yummy!

yawningdog - I have no idea what your financial situation is but I can tell you, as a NEw Yorker, that money is everything, especially in this expensive expensive city -- and, believe me, Laura has money. It pays for a great space, a nanny and enables her to never have to "cook" or "clean." Now, I like Laura. I enjoyed her on PR. She's funny and direct. She's entitled to have her lifestyle and enjoy it. But lots of people I know in NYC don't have the luxury of time to look good and I'd hate to think that women are gonna start measuring themselves against her (a public persona now), because some of us just aren't that privileged.

I'm sure I'm going to get skinned alive for posting this because people will read it as something against Laura but oh well.

Dear Anonymous,
Please don't worry about me, I am very happy in the middle of nowhere surrounded by dogs.

"But lots of people I know in NYC don't have the luxury of time to look good and I'd hate to think that women are gonna start measuring themselves against her (a public persona now), because some of us just aren't that privileged."

I will concede that Laura does have time to sew her own clothes and do art with her kids partly because she has money to pay for help with the cooking and cleaning, but I disagree that it takes a pile of money to take care of yourself and look good.

If you will notice, Laura almost always looked good on the show and she probably didn't have a ton of time to get ready in the mornings, nor did she probably have time to go out shopping. She had a very basic wardrobe of a few black dresses, the same sparkly brooch, some stockings and some shoes. It doesn't take any more time to put on a black dress or a lace skirt and top than it does to throw on jeans or a track suit.

She had her hair side parted and pulled back about 90% of the time, which does not take any more time than putting it up in a sloppy ponytail.

As to women starting to look at Laura as a public persona and compare themselves to her, and why that's any worse than comparing themselves to any other celebrity (who live a more unrealistic life than our dear Laura), I think the logic behind that is flawed. Laura's particular brand of fabulous glamour is more attainable for the average American woman than is that of, say, Heidi Klum.

My basic point is, it doesn't take a pile of money nor does it take hours to look good every day. It just takes some effort.

Beautiful! And FIERCE!! Robert, Laura, and Kayne - now that would be a SHOW!!

And lest anybody think I find Heidi Klum particularly fabulous or glamorous, let me just say that I pulled that name out of the air and didn't really take time to think about it.

Carry on.

I, too, miss Robert and feel that we never really got to see his capabilities as a designer. Let's face it, not everyone is well-suited to that stress-filled, fishbowl environment.

The Everyday Woman Challenge, however, left a bitter taste in my mouth. First of all, the playing field was anything but fair. All of the models should have been the same approximate size. In that they weren't, some of the designers, in effect, got the week off.

Secondly, it's one thing to have family members participate in a challenge. Was it really necessary to humiliate them by having them stand in a line and have the designers make a selection? As an athletically-challenged faygala, I shuddered during the process, remembering all-too-well grammar school gym class. Granted both individuals made mistakes, but is it any wonder Darlene & Jeff had problems, given the context?

And what was the challenge's objective? The design? Client-designer interaction? A combination of the 2?

Lastly, given the fashion industry's outright disdain for anyone larger than a size 4, referring to them as "zaftig" or "plus-sized", did a designer really have a chance of winning if his model was larger than a size 10? (If the industry must apply labels, how about using "anorexic-like", "bulemic-like", or "heroin addict-like" for those 90 lb. waifs they send down the runway?)

If the PR producers go down this path again in Season 4, I'll find something else to do on Wednesday nights. Oh, I'll still be here on Thursday mornings. I'd sooner go back to gym class than give up this blog.

(Sorry for the length of this rant.)

Okay, I got redirected by the link to Vincent's interview. Nothing new, but I did go to his website from the interview, and the crawl at the top (ad space) says, "COSTUMES FROM THE CRYPT!" as an add for Halloween Costumes.

Uuuuuh, Vinny, you may want to try to reconsider what your target demographic is in the ad placement.

;)

The sketch? Awesome. I love that even though the producers tried to make it seem like Robert and Kayne loathed Laura, that there really was a fun back and forth, East Coast cutting humor friendship there.

******************
Ain't that the truth!

I always thought Robert suffered more and more each week with the brow beatings he received. I think he just gave up and/or was too nice to ever win. That's why I don't think he should (or will) return.

One of Tim's podcasts, noted that Robert's model was difficult. (Vincent's sister? Who'd a thunk it?) She said she would not walk down the runway if the dress didn't meet with her approval. (Why did we never hear that?) Anyway, Robert gave her what she wanted. No, it wasn't the best but it was acceptable and he hadn't insulted his model in the process.

Peanut on the other hand?

When will I be able to cast this neckked demon out of my mental psyche???? Sorry for the rambling.

Priceless, and certainly right up the alley of this august blog community. Sorry for the advertisement!

Oh, of course. They could sob on Laura's shoulder and tell her sad, sad stories about starting life as an honest pair of cargos and, through Angela's cruel mutilation, ending up lime green and with "flattering" ass paneling in a sexy "genital wart" pattern. Angela, sans pants, could wait outside.

She had this sketch IN A DRAWER????

Egods, she should take it AT ONCE to the most fabulous framer she can find and have it done to look like a million bucks. It is a beautiful sketch and a one-of-a kind treasure that perfectly encapsulates her wonderful style and moment of fame and new beginning, signed by an already nationally famous designer and fellow PR contestant and friend, for Pete's sake. This is one outstanding family heirloom, as well as a thing of beauty and a source of pride and joy.

She should do it fast before the thing gets all wrinkled or the kids spill their drinks all over the drawer. Or the turtle poops on it.

I would buy a Laura Barbie. I would buy fifty frickin' Laura barbies. Accessories would include: ribbon shoes and stilettos, a pile of children, an adorable mad scientist husband, a cocktail, LV luggage, pasties, red lipstick, and several super low cut dresses in black, red, and neutral.
